Open government data is free, public data available to all. It’s a resource with great potential economic and social value. At the GovLab, we’ve been studying the ways that businesses and organizations are using data as a driver for innovation. Our Open Data 500 study now profiles more than 500 US based companies that build all or part of their business on open government data. These businesses are developing new approaches in healthcare, finance, energy, education, agriculture, and many other sectors of the economy.

Mexico, in particular, has been a leader in the Americas. A whole community of innovators in Mexico are using open data to create new business and non-profit opportunities, conduct research, make data-based decisions and solve economic and social problems.

On October 1st, the GovLab announced the beta launch of the Open Data 100 Mexico at ConDatos, the Second Annual Regional Conference on Open Data for Latin America and the Caribbean. Over the next few months, the study results will culminate in an online platform, which will list at least 100 companies that have completed a survey on their use of open government data in Mexico.
You can learn more and view participating companies at this link. If you represent an open data company working in Mexico, we invite you to complete a survey. Alternatively, you can help by recommending an open data company by emailing [email protected] or by joining the Twitter conversation at #OD100MX.
