Ongoing research on corporate data sharing featured in the 2014 Internet Monitor

The Berkman Center’s Internet Monitor project has just released its 2014 annual report highlighting the most compelling events, trends and debates to data, internet and society over the past year.
The Internet Monitor features an interactive year in review of major internet-related events as well as a collection of short contributions from researchers and thinkers in the following sections: platforms and policy; data and privacy; public discourse; transnational legal tensions and internet governance; and a concluding looking forward piece for 2015.
The Monitor’s section on data and privacy features the GovLab’s ongoing research on corporate data sharing, an emerging trend in which companies have begun sharing anonymized and aggregated data with third-party users toward greater public good. Written by Chief Research and Development Officer Stefaan Verhulst and research fellow David Sangokoya, the article describes our initial taxonomy of current corporate data sharing practices and considerations towards a more comprehensive mapping of this next frontier of open data.
