The Open Data Policy Lab supports decision-makers at the local, state and national levels as they accelerate the responsible re-use and opening of data for the benefit of society and the equitable spread of economic opportunity.

Background

The belief that we are living in a data age — one characterized by unprecedented amounts of data, with unprecedented potential — has become mainstream. round the world, an ever-increasing number of governments at the local, state and national levels now release large datasets for the public’s benefit. Yet despite such initiatives, many open data projects (and data collaboratives) remain fledgling — especially those at the state and local level. Governments and other organizations need support and counsel to expand their offerings.

Description

The Open Data Policy Lab works to accelerate the responsible re-use of data by lowering existing barriers and building a center of expertise that will be available to all stakeholders involved in democratizing access to data. The Open Data Policy Lab will achieve these goals through four areas of work: Analysis, using comparative research and analysis to identify best practices; Guidance, developing and curating guidelines, toolkits, and frameworks; Community, fostering a community of data stewards, chief data officers, and other decisionmakers; and Action, convening governments and stakeholders to identify key questions htat can be answered by opening up data.
